To acquire a license, the first step would involve checking the regulations that exist in your state or the location at which you intend to work. Not all states and districts have the same criteria when it comes to issuing private security guards licenses. Also, the qualification terms can change on a regular basis. Only those individuals above the age of eighteen are legally allowed to work as a security officer.
As the responsibility of a security guard is extremely important, there will be a need to attend classroom training sessions prior to a license being given. The topics covered in training would involve material relating to emergency procedures, correct detention methods, law, and property and trespass rights. All classroom training programs would require the successful completion of a written test that would show the individual has a well rounded knowledge of essential protocols.
It would not be possible to attain the necessary license if you have a criminal record. For this reason a background check is always carried out before any documentation is issued. It is now also a requirement that all applicants undergo mandatory drug testing at a clinic designated by the licensing authority.
If you intend to work as an armed security guard, there will be additional training necessary before any license is provided. The responsibility involved with being an armed security officer is extremely high, for this reason the weapons training provided would be of an intensive nature. It is preferable to first of all gain a regular security personnel license before undertaking weapons training at a later date.
Upon receiving a license, you will not automatically be approved for every position that you apply for. There can be strict terms laid out by each security firm that govern employment hiring procedures. Once you are successful in taking up a role as a security officer, there will still be ongoing training that needs to be taken. Each security company will have exact guidelines and policies that need to be met and followed.
Never underestimate the responsibility involved with being a member of a security personnel team. Members of the public will look to you for assistance when they feel threatened. Also, if you fail in your duties, not only would you find yourself out of work, it is possible for your license to be revoked.
A responsible and diligent security officer can have a long and prosperous career. As the level of threat that exists on our streets appears to be increasing on an ongoing basis, the number of opportunities in this sector will continue to rise.
